380 Km on a single battery, Smeshgear makes it possible

An electric motorcycle with a top speed of 160 km/h and a range of 380 km? Our SmeshGear. made it possible for TU/e Student Team STORM. Showing the world what electric transport is capable of. With that aim they wanted to travel the world in 80 days on their self-built electric motor. 26,000 kilometers in 80 days. The team drove on their electric touring motorcycle, which in their view is the epitome of how electric transport should be: quiet, efficient and with a sufficient range. The motorcycle has a top speed of 160 km/h and has a range of 380 km, thanks to our SmeshGear.

Journey around the world

The Storm wave motorcycle is fully electric and is equipped with a two-stage, SmeshGear transmission. Partly because of this, this motorcycle is comparable in terms of performance to a big touring motorcycle, and requires only a ‘small’ (A2) drivers license.

On Sunday, August 14, 2016, the Storm Wave embarked on a journey around the world in 80 days. The SmeshGear made it possible for the Storm team to save a lot of energy. This technique increases the distance that the motorcycle can travel on a daily basis. The Storm team itself called the SmeshGear, together with the battery pack, the two unique inventions that made this trip around the world possible.

The consumption of this motorcycle in combination with the SmeshGear is about 1: 13,3. This means that they can cover 13,3 kilometers with 1kWh of energy.

Tractive force

The electric motor in the STORM Wave normally produces 120 Nm of pulling power. It is able to peak 242 Nm for a limited amount of time. This creates a wheel torque of about 760Nm. Such torque figures are getting in the zone of the maxium torque that can be put on a flat and hard surface. The batteries will be having a hard time, because they are practically short-circuited.

With the SmeshGear we were able to realise a wheel torque of 1180 Nm without overloading the electric motor and thus using relatively little energy. Of course we did use both systems once, which resulted in 2360 Nm on the rear wheel. Great performance for an electric motorcycle.
